Alina Mungiu-Pippidi is the democracy chair at Hertie School of Governance in Berlin and an expert on governance innovation for the European Commission. She is also the principal investigator in a report on integrity and trust in Europe for the 2017 Dutch EU presidency. Professor Mungiu-Pippidi is the author of a theory of governance, defined as the set of formal and informal institutions determining social allocation in a given society. Her theory was published in various journal articles. Mungiu-Pippidi is the founder of the popular social media watchdog platform Clean Romania!, whose civic work greatly influenced two rounds of Romanian presidential elections, in 2004 and 2014, as well as a designer of innovative anticorruption grassroots strategies.
